So, it's 1973... Secretariat has been proclaimed "Super Horse" on the cover of Newsweek. He's the very embodiment of "majestic", the most gorgeous creature that ever hit the tracks. His career has been fantastic, and then he dominates the great Sham in the two previous Triple Crown races.
So, there hadn't been a Triple Crown winner in 25 years. There's a lot of pre-race excitement. We all KNOW he's going to win the Triple Crown... it's a foregone conclusion. We gather around the TV to witness history, but it's so inevitable that it's all going to be anticlimactic.
Anticlimactic, did I say? The HELL it would be. Secretariat would have none of that. What we then witnessed was something you really had to witness in real time to appreciate... we just stared at each other in amazement and awe. How did that just happen? Incredible.

I really thought he would collapse, didn't think there was any way he could run that long and that fast. Unreal.

As I said earlier, I'm not a horse racing enthusiast, but I skipped playing golf that afternoon so I could watch the race. I'm glad I did.
