My cell phone has this awesome feature called an alarm. Once I realize what time they are moving on the weekends, I set my alarm for that time during the week.

easy enough, lets remove all bugs and worms from entire yard and garden
You know they do make things for this, right?
Troll on though

My grandmother thought that she could keep armadillos out of her garden by putting a few mothballs around it
That is an old wives tale for snakes, not dillos.

I read somewhere that they hate the way ammonia smells.
I don't know how you could use the ammonia around your trees, but you might try putting some mothballs around them.
Mothball's main ingredient is a chemical call napthalene, not ammonia.

If you don't want armadillos and are too lazy to wake up during the night to shoot them, then yes you can use it.

At our camp where we didn't give a shite about the yard, we used to wait on them, sneak up on them and kick the shite out of them Aggie football style.
Don't touch them too much, they carry leprosy.

Electric fences work well. My dad has used them for years.
You're out $100 and you can sleep all night.
Plus you don't have to worry about dealing with the pissed off coon, skunk or opossum you caught instead.

Get a concrete armadillo from one of those concrete yard decoration places. Put it in your yard and they will not come around because they are teritorial. My grandfather had the same problem so a friend of his got him a concrete one as a joke. He put it in his yard and they suddenly disappeared.
