I hiked about 5 miles one way over a mountain yesterday and back again. Woke up today and hit the weights hard at the gym. I don't feel a single ache. If the weather wasn't going to be shite I'd be on the trails again tomorrow. I just hit 40. I've seen 70 year old guys running the mountain trails and skiing here in CO regularly.
Stay active and don't let yourself go to shite and you can fight off age. You can't beat it but you can damn sure have a good time until the end.

I considered myself in great shape until I took a yoga class.
I could barely walk the next day.
I do have great cardio skills tho.

This. I'm 46 and play soccer every week on a team that is mostly 20-somethings who played NCAA level. Our keeper was the starter on a national title team from about five years ago and has the ring to prove it.
From what I've read things don't really seriously slide until the mid-50's. Until then one can still be at least competitive for surprisingly long.
