The problem is it's such a definitive end to a series that the producers have to be certain they've milked 24 for everything they can before they pull it off.

I think the producers wanted to see how the ratings were before they wrote this last episode. Since ratings were apparently strong, they left on a cliffhanger/open-ended note to assure future season(s). Had the ratings been weaker, they probably would have let Jack die IMO

Did they not finish filming before the season started airing? I hadn't heard that. Or do you think they filmed 2 or more endings?

I was wondering if they would leave the ending open in case the show displayed that is still had some juice.

Personally, I'd prefer to see him ride off in the sunset with one of the surviving babes from past seasons (Kate #1, Kate #2,). Hell, maybe he could take up with Marilyn Bauer and raise Josh..i mean the kid is probably his son anyway

I don't know for certain. I just have to agree that they want to milk it for all its worth, so they kept that in mind with the script

It's not that it would be a happy ending, just the right ending. 24 is a tragedy in the literary sense, and the tragic hero can't really have a happy ending. If the last episode of 24 was Jack going to live with Kim and his granddaughter, I'd be disappointed.

Looked like he thought about it before deciding to slice and dice the Chinese.

I loved this season and the finale. I guess not everyone felt this way, but Jack is a tragic figure. And his relationship with Chloe is all he has really had for much of the show. For him to realize what she means to him at the end, in my opinion, sort of sums up all his relationships and puts them into one.
This season to me is a fitting finale, but I am left wanting more. If they bring it back I will be ecstatic though. I would love to see Jack coming back and taking out the Russians and having a happy ending. But if they leave it at this, I think he had a full character development, and this ending would be appropriate.
But again, I am left wanting more.

Yea, Jack Bauer has become the poster child for a tragic hero. Even a reuniting with his family isn't the right ending for him. The only ending for Jack that'll seem right is death. The problem is it's such a definitive end to a series that the producers have to be certain they've milked 24 for everything they can before they pull it off.

I basically agree, though I will say I thought the Season 8 ending was nice, too. A man who's saved America so many times, yet has to live the rest of his life as an outlaw on the run, a fugitive. It lacked a complete finality of death, but it was a bit of a tragedy nonetheless. And yet Jack was at least "free" I guess, rather than in enemy hands or dead.

And of course the other great thing about the Season 8 ending was it left open the door for more 24 (which the producers obviously walked right through since 24LAD was created). The producers, after a few years, also could have decided to shut the door and end the series (and it seemed like this would be the case after the movie never got off the ground, until 24LAD was announced). I would have been satisfied if that was how the series ended and nothing else happened. And it actually would have been intriguing because I think the vast majority of 24 fans expect/expected the final act from Jack to be death, and it put a bit of a twist on it.

I think basically everyone agrees this ending is not a satisfying one for the series. And I think the producers know this and there will be another season. I think the Season 8 ending was a good option to end it all, but it's been exhuasted and they decided to come back, so I don't think they'll go a similar route for the (next) series finale. So that leaves reuniting with family or death. And death just seems the more fitting option. Of course, the 24 people are creative, so maybe they'll come up with something completely different that's great.

So we'll definitely be getting another season. Otherwise he's have been wired to blow and blasted the chopper out of the sky.

Jack killing Ching Chang whatever with a sword? One, I've never seen jack kill someone in such a way. Two, it was quick...he should have cut off his balls, shoved them in his mouth, taped it shut and beat him to death before he bled out...he killed Audrey for Christ's sake

I was waiting for Jack to pull out a grenade and blow up the chopper once Chloe and his Bosnian boy were clear. The Russians didn't even pat him down. If Jack is to ever die, he must take the bad guys with him.

I agree with everything you said (including the full character development part, though that can always continued to be refined/developed further in future seasons) EXCEPT the last six words. I think it was great Jack "sacrificed" himself for Chloe. In fact, I even think it would have been an appropriate series ending if, after Chloe was safely with Belcheck, Jack was sniped and killed right there. But I think it'd be pretty lousy if it ended with him on a helicopter with Russians and presumed years of torture at their hands in his future before ultimately dying in a prison.

Russians probably thought of that and warned this deception would cost chloe and jack's family their lives
