Donald Sterling is reportedly prepared to sue the NBA in an effort to block fellow owners from forcing him to seel the Clippers. Following commissioner Adam Silver's lifetime ban of Sterling on Tuesday, the NBA Board of Governors is preparing to vote to force Sterling to sell his Clippers franchise. This process led an unnamed NBA executive who is close to Sterling say, ""He is not going to sell the team." The unnamed executive also added that Sterling is prepared to file a lawsuit and potentially tie up the future of the team for years. We should see what Sterling's next move is within the next two weeks as the NBA constitution and bylaws give Silver three days to provide Sterling with charges, Sterling five days to respond to the charges, and the Board of Governors 10 days to vote following Sterling's response. It sounds like this situation is about to get even messier than it already was.

If this really does go on for years, I wonder how it will affect players and coaches from going/playing for the clips

Sterling will win the lawsuit, and after that he should build a new Clippers team by signing all of the best white players in the league.

This whole thing makes me sick.

Are we in Nazi Germany? Can this guy not have an opinion, regardless whether others view it as being racist?

He didn't go on Sportscenter and denounce all blacks. He was giving an opinion while unknowingly being recorded.

Here's a hypothetical....

Tom Benson lives in an upscale neighborhood. He and his neighbor notice that a black family is moving in across the street. The neighbor comments on how upset he is about it and asks Tom Benson his thoughts. Benson says "I'm not crazy about that either". The neighbor is secretly recording him. Neighbor then attempts to extort him. Benson refuses and the neighbor gives audio to the media. The NFL forces Benson to sell the team and fines him millions....

Crazy.

What happens when an owner calls someone a "homo" as a joke or something? Does he lose his team as well?

What if instead of a black friend, this sociopathic girlfriend of the clippers owner was bringing a 7' tall transgender to the games and he asked her not to? Would the outcome be the same? (that is a serious question).

Sterling's response should be something like this:

quote:

It is no secret that the woman at the center of this issue is my personal mistress. It must be made clear that she is on the payroll because she provides personal services for me. And, as a result, she is frequently given access to high dollar events including Clipper games, etc.

Keep in mind that this relationship can only exist only because of the acceptance from my beloved wife. Our relationship clearly isn't traditional, but it works for us and we've been married for 50 years. My wife's understanding of my 2nd relationship has become an issue recently as this well paid mistress has done some admittedly innocent things that my wife believed negatively affected the image of our marriage. In this case, the publicizing of pictures with famous, rich black men was an issue for her; due to the fact that she is a well known whore.

In an attempt to keep the peace, I approached the whore about removing the images from the public websites. I recognized at the time that my request was illogical. But, it was an attempt to maintain the peace that exists in this difficult 3 party relationship. Keep in mind, that personally, I have no issues with her, or anyone interacting with black people. In fact, I tried to make it very clear multiple times during the recorded call. I even went so far as to state that I had no issue with her doing anything she wanted in her personal life (including sleeping with black men if she wanted to). However, given the professional nature of our relationship, and of my wife's perception of a negative image, I asked her to modify her public website. This was an attempt to keep the peace. I knew that if she wouldn't do that, the relationship could no longer exist.

I want to personally and emphatically state that I have no ill feeling towards black people. I've never discriminated against any employee of the Clippers, nor do I intend to do so. I personally welcome any and all black people to clipper games and have always done so. And, as you know, I willfully and happily employ black people from the top to the bottom of the Clipper organization. The statements recorded must be viewed in its proper context...and should not be viewed as a general opinion of mine.

I believe that if you view my comments in this proper context, they will make much more sense. I only wish that I was given the opportunity to address these allegations to my NBA brethren before any action was promised by our new commissioner.

Furthermore, I must bring into question the wisdom of allowing the media and players union access to what should have been a tight lipped conversation between owners. This is literally the nuclear option for NBA owners. To be this far down the road without us having discussed this in person is an extreme failure in my view. Under no circumstances should an owner be ousted in a manner being attempted here, without first being given an opportunity to personally address this situation within the Association. But, more importantly, to cede control of this even to the players association and/or to the media is a catastrophic failure of the leadership of the NBA. I firmly believe that this would not have occurred under the leadership of our former commissioner.

Finally, I want to assure you that any attempt to force the sale of the Clippers will be met with a strict legal challenge. I believe that there are many owners who would fail to meet the standard that has been applied to me in this case. As such, the attempted punishment is capricious and arbitrary and a violation of the NBA owners constitution.

I recognize that, given the misinformation and the hasty actions of our commissioner, that the NBA is currently in a tough position. In an attempt to make this process as painless as possible, I will consider an offer for the Clipper franchise from the NBA. Keep in mind, that this offer will be significantly above fair market value.

TLDR version

a.) Give plausible explanation for events.
b.) Blame commissioner for acting too hastily.
c.) Blame commissioner for ceding power to the union
d.) Threaten legal action
e.) Shot across the bow of other owners if this case goes to trial.
f.) Give an out to the NBA to buy the franchise at a premium.
