I wonder how much production is lost by people waiting on trains, how much gas, how many lives are lost by crashes with trains... basically what is the total cost in time, money, and lives due to roads intersecting with railroads, and how that compares with what it would cost to build overpasses over most railroad crossings.

Any civil engineers want to take a stab at this?

So you want a 25' overpass over any at grade rail crossing. Yea that would be feasible. ...

Too much to think about in that sentence.. I just work on them...

As for the lives.. Trains can't swerve.. We just go straight.. Now people going around the gates.. That's the reason.. Or when the lights are flashing.. Or when there is a stop sign at the crossing.. Most people become complacent crossing the same tracks every day and lose respect for the tracks that are there.. Eventually there will be a train..

I use to live about 2 miles from a train crossing that would cross everyday going to work. This is a fairly busy 4 lane road. It was notorius for stopping 30-60 minutes EVERYTIME. I saw last week the city is trying to get funding to build an overpass. Not sure how much they had already raised, but they were applying for a $15MM grant from the state to cover the remaining cost....So your standard overpass would cost over $15MM.
