It isn't the deaths that are the issue. It is the fact that he shot them, paused, realized they were no longer threats, and then executed them.
Once he realized they were no longer threats, shooting them is no longer an act of self defense.

THIS. As well as dragging them to another room in tarps and waiting until the next day to alert the authorites.
Scruffy, it's amazing how many people can't comprehend the difference between this story and protecting yourself/family from a break in.
