I wonder of this means we will be looking at RBs in the later rounds of the draft

There's not much trade value and probably only a few teams who would even be interested. I would imagine he'll be with the Saints this season and 50/50 (at best) next year.
His value to the team will likely be less than his salary next season whether it's a 5th year option or free agent deal.
There's just nothing special about him which would warrant paying him more than the other 100 free agent RBs with similar skills.
You could find a rookie who could produce the same results (or better) while keeping the payroll manageable for the position. It's no longer a position where you should invest a large percentage of your salary cap figure.
