One was nominated for Best Picture the other wasn't but I agree with you and the fan favorite is Empire.

Agreed. I really don't think it gets its just due as a legitimately great film and story.

Think about it -- it was a sci fi film that became a cultural phenomenon before being into sci fi was cool. Plus, in terms of the story itself, it plops you right in the middle of a universe, plot, and entire realm with no backstory or context and the viewing audience wasn't hindered by it at all.
