Letting him throw 130+ pitches is crazy. He obviously will ride this kid's arm until it falls off as long as it furthers his career.

Mainieri's riding the Nola train into the ground too. I wouldn't be surprised to see Nola suffer fatigue in the regionals/supers this year.

The ERA is meaningless stat to me.

The 94 K's is extremely impressive.

The .226 average is not all that great with these bats.

If rodon could develop a plus changeup he woul dc be sick. I just wonder if he ends up a closer with two pitches.

Hard to pass on a lefty with dominant velocity and a slider that scouts claim as unhittable at times.

TJ recovery has really progressed to amazing levels. Worth the risk.

No better place to develop a change than in the minors. He has two dominant pitches to help give him wiggle room in learning to throw a change better.

I like Rodon's potential but his coach is beating the hell out of his arm and I'm pretty positive he'll need TJ in the next couple years from that amount of wear.

If we take Rodon, first thing I would do is shut him down and not even let him pick up a baseball until 2015. A few starts at low A are ultimately irrelevant. Rest his arm.

I'd really like to take a middle of the order power bat (cough cough Kris Bryant last year). But I don't see a guy like that for 1-1 this year.

aaron nola FTW

I saw some mocks that have him prairie dogging the top 10. I hope the Cubs get him, but they may have better prospects available there.

Personally, a college arm that can fly through the system is what I'd be psyched for.

They need a power bat in a bad way.

Thank you Ryno.

We don't need another arm. We need sticks.

But I guess at 1-1 you have to take the best player regardless of position

They need a middle of the order power bat. Right now they are desperate that springer singleton and correa will all stick. Odds are they wont.

Singleton is young and raking at AAA. He does profile as a 3 hole power bat. Springer has 25HR potential out of the 2 or clean up spots. Correa could have 20 homer pop. But it would be nice to pick up another guy who could potentially hit 30 or more homers.

Not every starter needs a changeup if they can hit spots consistently or figure out another offspeed offering. I'm confident Rodon can get a show-me change will will make him a starter, easily.

A ML average changeup would make him an ace. The only thing that worries me is the over-use on his arm the past few years, especially this year. It would really suck to draft a guy 1-1 and then see him recover from TJ surgery.

Who isn't going to stick, Miss Cleo?

I mean, you're so hard up for them getting called up....now they're not going to stick?

I don't know. You don't know but odds are all three won't reach full potential. It's a numbers game. I hope they all make it but you have to be realistic.

The Houston Chronicle had a great article on all the players the Astros are targeting in this weekend paper.

At the college level with amateur defense and bullshite scorekeeping (calling an E a Hit), i'd say it is HIGHLY misleading and perhaps irrelevant compared to looking at the tools, BAA, and K/BB ratio.
Joe Kelly had an ERA above 5 in college, Randaudo above 8, Cingrani had an 8.59 ERA as a starter in college, Lance Lynn near 5.00 ERA. ERA means precisely dick in college ball when evaluating a pitcher from a pro team's perspective. Sorry you can't wrap your mind around that. Where's Cesar Carrillo btw? His ERA was incredible in college.

Rodon is starting to worry me as the number one pick. I don't want to have to wait for someone like Kolek to go through the system as a HS pick but it might be the safer move now

In this case, it's certainly not at the top that I'm looking at.

Rodon's K/9 has dipped going from 12.54 as a sophomore to 10.57 this year.

His WHIP has increased, 0.98 as a FRO, 1.05 as a SOPH, 1.16 as a JR.

I'm no scout so it's not my job to figure these reasons as to why, but it's certainly the question that has to be asked right now.
