i don't know why we try to do that. i think it has something to do with avoiding how terrible mankind used to be. we're just not comfortable viewing them in that way and we would rather make our contemporary selves feel guilty for much more minor transgressions

I think humans just tend to attribute awful characteristics to those in positions of authority regardless of the shared value of that characteristic.

Just look at the hypocrisy with members of the Republicans and Democrats when a member of the other commits a common transgression. "So-and-so is being a typical democrat by participating in corruption" but when the Republican does it it's an isolated incident or "the other side does it too."
