worked at WDW 20 years ago. Disney College Program. made $5.60/hour. Thought it was good money. But, I knew I wasn't going to make a career out of it. I was 1.5 years from graduating LSU. I could've stayed cause they wanted me to work fulltime, but I couldn't have lived on that salary. Now, if I was retired and lived in Orlando area and needed a job, that would be a great job to have.

Yeah, this is basically my understanding of the vast majority of Disney employment.

My only question is, I would assume had you stayed there is some sort of management track type system, whereby if you wanted it to be more than just a resume padder/paid internship type deal, you would actually start to make at least decent money, no?

Yes, I would've definitely gone into management. Problem was, I couldn't have afforded to stay there alone. Disney is smart. They pay college student very little money (bascially contract workers...no benefits when I was there). Trained us for a couple weeks to work in the parks. Students work for a semester until the next bunch arrive. Wasn't hard work. Easy and fun.
