I have an opportunity to purchase a residential lot that is soon be commercial, but it is only one-half acre. Guys, do you think that this would be too small for most commercial development? What kind of business/franchise can you see fitting on this? Thanks.

Need location to make any accurate assessment.

You could site a lemonade stand there.
OK, I couldn't resist, sorry.
Honestly it's hard to tell without more details. As was already stated location matters quite a bit, as does the kind of business that might locate there. The size will dictate what kind of firm locates there - it's plenty of space for a laundromat or an IT services firm, but obviously not enough for an aircraft manufacturing facility. If the site is close to other businesses that get foot traffic that can be a bonus too. But really it's all in the details.
I guess the biggest risk is whether the site lot really will be commercial as you predict it will be.

No it's not too small but it is small. It also depends on location, layout, and accessibility.
I've seen drive-thru Starbucks on smaller tracts. Small retail strips, professional offices with 15-20 parking. but it all depends on site.
Is it a square? long narrow rectangle? Are there development guidelines? Setback restrictions? What about access to utilities?
