The ashes surrounding the cabin aren't interrupted until Hurley messes it up, right?
The smoke monster is there in the first episode of the show, and seen as early as the 3rd

I'm not saying that the ashes were around teh cabin from the start of the show...just that they were there at the point Locke was taken to the cabin, and the breaking of the chain of ash is what allowed MIB/Smokie to escape that night.

That's what I thought. It seems like a major inconsistency if so. I don't remember seeing him being put into the cabin though.
