The sand is actually ashes. And the ashes were used to barricade the MIB in the cabin for all of those years until Hurley got frightened and ran over the ashes, causing the barrier to break, thus releasing MIB to choose another host (Locke). You see the people at the temple in season 6 use ashes to keep the MIB out as well as Bram when he's in the foot of the statue protecting himself from fLocke. Hurley asked that temple assistant Lennon why they sprinkled the ashes, he responded,"To keep HIM out." Now I assume if you use something to keep someone out, then you can use it to keep him in.

I love and miss lost. They need a movie.

But, if MIB was indeed the smoke monster, he wasn't actually trapped by those ashes. It's kind of confusing.

Then how the hell do you explain the monster appearing prior to this? Also, how the hell did "Christian" appear on the boat? Smokey couldn't leave the island. What's to stop him from taking it to the mainland? Was this another one of the made up rules like Ben couldn't kill Widmore? Also, how did "Christian" appear in the hospital when the smoke alarm went off?
