Just took a look at the trenches of the battlefield where wars are won or lost (bases mid TH9-high TH8s) and wanted to share my findings.
Below are the 12 attacks that we currently are showing on the map:
Base name/TH level/attack strategy/# of stars
junie919/th9/hogs/3
dave/th9/hogs/3
jersonzz/th9/loons+drag/1
lunatic/th9/hogs/2
pipsqueak/th9/giant+healer/1
miguel/th9/loon+minion/2
sway/th9/hogs/3
cr5/th8/hogs/3
zero260/th8/hogs/3
torjacker/th8/giant+healer/1
lich/th8/hogs/3
Average stars per raid in this range (with hogs): 2.875
Average stars per raid in this range (any other attack strategy): 1.25
Moral of this tiny sample sized story? Hogs give you the best chance to 3* a TH8-9 base. If you are a TH8 or above, hogs are your best bet when attacking bases at that level.
EDIT: this only applies to our guys who have 3* hogs or above. If your hogs are <3, stick em in the oven next time your lab is free!

Lvl 4's are coming. I was going to gem them if it was close but I think we are too far away for me to make a difference and burn 400 gems in the process.

Should I use hogs? I'm only TH 7 but I'm maxed out.I've been using dragons and loons.

Hogs is the only thing I will use and should be the first thing upgraded as resources become available.

So now that we are pushing hogs. What spells do you run with it? Heal or rage?

my strat is to lure the CC/BK/AQ out and then drop my BK/AQ/archers to take them out alongside a heal/rage spell. Let them fight for a few secs and dump hogs right behind them into both spells. I then drop heal spells as the hogs spread out into clumps of defenses.

Most people use heal to protect from splash damage around wizard towers.

Down 10. Couple of high level attacks left on both ends though.
I royally fricked up twice today and dropped a pair of goose eggs so we need you, hawg, et al to put the team on your backs. W isn't out the question but it'll be tough.
