Some don't get the chance to get out and better themselves because they have to get a job right out of high school to help support their family.
ETA: Unless you're talking about taking care of the illegitimate children they had in highschool. If that's the case, their "environment" had nothing to do with it.

Correct. They survived. Just barely though. Having to worry about your next meal or living with no electricity half the time isn't exactly what most people can let happen while they go to school full-time and aren't able to work as much. It's one less mouth to feed, but not all the mouths may have been getting fed in the first place.
