A great deal of it has to do with opportunity. If you study the prewar backgrounds of the men involved in the Holocaust, there was nothing remarkable about most of them. They were ordinary doctors, lawyers, professors, police officers who were handed the power of life and death over people. Given the right indoctrination and circumstances, humans are capable of just about anything.
