during Robert's rebellion, Stannis and his people were stuck (iirc at Storm's End) due to a blockade. they were starving and Stannis refused to give up (b/c he's hard as a motherfricker). Davos, being the smuggling genius that he is, snuck in some onions for Stannis's men to eat. afterwards, Stannis knighted Davos (and cut off the ends of his fingers on one hand, for all the smuggling he had done in his life). Stannis also took Davos's son as his squire (who you saw earlier in the show)
