The crazy thing is with the inevitably of electric/natural gas/etc cars the demand for oil could take a massive hit. Combined with cars getting more mpg every year, the cost of gas could become almost a non-factor.

Car makers could get 40+ mpg on just about any car right now if they wanted too. the thing is they dont want to.

If its a law that they have to all be at 50 mpg in 10 years it will be there pretty easily.

doesn't matter, gas will be $6+/gallon in ten years.

It costs money. Cars are already expensive to the end user, and manufacturers want to sell cars.

Ii wonder if you would have gotten the same answer if you asked someone in 1994 the same question.

If you had asked me in 1994 when I was in highschool I would have said the gasoline engine would be dead by 2014 but it's not. Hell we just started getting much more fuel efficient cars recently. The car industry has come a long way towards electric powered vehicles since then but no other types of alternate fuel sources have gained to much ground.

This.

The majority of vehicles on the road won't be manually operated by the driver, either.

New cars will get 50+ mpg, but they'll be electric or come with two power trains like the Volt and cost $100,000.

The real question with a government push like the CAFE standards is if the cars will be affordable or desirable.

My 2007 Chevy pickup truck will get 19 mpg in 20 years if it's still running. New technology may be introduced that changes everything, but if it's not cheap, people may hang on to their older cars for longer.

I think it takes 30 years, IMHO, but I tend to agree. Electric motors will have a massive increase in popularity and will serve most local commuter traffic - ultimately, there will have to evolve some sort of battery swap or rapid charging (the Tesla model) for long trips, but, once that hurdle is overcome, economies of scale, battery technology, etc., will drive gasoline internal combustion engines from the market.
