The pilot is expected to get the plane on the ground or die trying. If he has a parachute and bails out leaving the passengers up there, he'll face the same consequences as a captain leaving the ship.
In the case of a crash landing at an airport, there are first responders there to take over immediately. In a scenario where they land in a remote area, the pilot is expected to organize the survivors and take charge of them until they're rescued.
