My wife's family came here in the '20's from Italy. They speak English, not their native language, fine just one generation later.
If your ancestors came here via slavery prior to 1860, and you have not mastered the language, well that is on you. DWI!

And while that phenomenon exists, white European immigrants get just as much flak for their accents and their quirky syntax as Hispanics and Asians. Black African and black Caribbean immigrants aren't all that common.
