The mindset of people was different back then too. They were much more trusting back then. If the Govt said The BD's were a dangerous cult a lot of people took that at face value. I actually got into a fistfight the day after with my boss and owner of the company that I was working for back then. He was a reserve deputy or some such and was saying they got what they deserved.

Well the BD's were armed and did fire at the ATF when they were assaulting the compound.
That said, the ATF totally botched the raid. They ran a tank into the side of the building and shot tear gas that ignited a fire. Or maybe they purposely set the building on fire - I can't remember.
