1- I think it's probably a cyclical thing. Sometimes it's more popular, sometimes less. But there is always likely a core that remains. I think bowling leagues have been shown on just about every sitcom ever broadcast over the years (slight exaggeration there?)

2- Regarding that article Kafka posted: Surely people who bowl but not in leagues don't do so totally alone. I'd guess they do so in groups of friends of a couple of families together or maybe for birthday parties or such. I'd think the social interaction could still occur at these.

They were super into bowling and rules and didn't seem like they were having fun at all, you should have seen these people.

I worked as a supervisor for about a year at a relatively popular bowling alley, and these guys (very few ladies) take things very seriously, but part of the difference is that they have a lot more money involved. I played in some rec leagues and enjoyed it but the season would drag on to long and I never liked playing that much. The thing I did like was that I could drink with my friends without too many idiots that you get around you during open bowl.

Because of the area of this bowling area we were busy a lot too. We would get a 1-2 Hour waiting list in the winter. Those were some crazy weekend nights.
