What he is describing has been called 'striving'. The concept came up when the SC struck down aff action in the U. Texas law school case.
To simplify....why should Bill Cosby's son get an advantage because he's black while the white child of a garbage collector gets no advantage with the same grades and test scores?
A lot of colleges went to conditions needed to overcome adversity. A lot of it is circumvention of race preference and under qualified blacks get admitted in order to achieve campus diversity.
Thomas Sowell has written extensively on this and the concept of mismatching.
