How long have prices been at or above three bucks per gallon? Let's take a look at that gallon of milk in the fridge while we are at it, oh hell look at food costs totally in the last five years.

My 12 oz pack of bacon is the same price as my 16 oz used to be. No worries.

Considering the amount of work that goes into drilling for oil, shipping that oil, refining it, and then shipping that product to gas station a quarter of a mile from my house, 3 bucks a gallon seems like a steal.

Then how come it can be less than $1/gallon in places like Mexico and Venezuela that have nationalized oil companies?

I hate to admit it but I remember when a gallon of gas was less than 40 cents. LOL

The gas prices where I am are bipolar. Last Friday they were at $3.01/gal. Monday they were at $3.29/gal. Today they are $3.19/gal.

WTF?

Up 30-40 cents a gallon in Alabama over the past 2 weeks.

Gas prices in BR have gone up only about 10 cents over the last 2 weeks.

Venezuela makes it's money selling most of it's oil on the international market. So they can afford to sell it cheap domestically. Hey it's the least their government can do for them since they can't even provide toilet paper.

I couldn't even tell you what a gallon of gas costs - 3 something. I just slide the card, pump and go.

Gas prices are never going down unless drilling and production technology drastically improves and we start getting more oil out of the ground more cheaply. You may see a domestic mini-glut here fairly soon unless we can start exporting oil again. The result will be lower prices, maybe down into the $70s/bbl. So in the short term you may see lower gas prices and laying down rigs in most of the major US oil plays. The glut will dry up, prices will go back up for oil and gasoline and the rigs will start drilling again.

So long term it's $3+ forever.

The year I became a tax deduct, 1952, the price of gas was 27 cents, equivalent to $2.20 in 2010 according to one site I looked at.

Another site for 2010 said the average price was $2.70. Hmmmm.

It's jumped about .40 cents in that past couple weeks here in SC. Out of nowhere.

yeah, the utility of gas far exceed the cost. The fact that I can go 35 miles for about $4 is pretty fricking amazing.

Yes it is. I downsized to a smaller SUV with a more efficient engine and much better gas mileage (30+ MPG).

I really miss my Tahoe with the Triton V8 engine though.

Get rid of the truck, get a hybrid, take the bus, move. There are a lot of ways to reduce your gas costs. have you done any of these or do you sit there and just bitch?
First take 2 steps back and literally FREAK YOUR OWN FACE! Second, show me a hybrid that will pull a boat or four-wheeler, and go through mud. Third clean diesel >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> hybrid.

There is a car produced by an American car company. It gets 70 miles per gallon but you can't buy it. It is the diesel powered Chevy Aveo sold in Europe but the EPA won't allow it to be imported.

Yes, but even the most conservative estimates on the price of gas after nationalization here in the US predict a 50% drop at the pump from what it is now.

The largest single factor in determining the cost of gas production is the price of crude oil purchased at the "Cartel Price." However, if an oil producer like the US decided to nationalize its oil production, the cost at the pump would be significantly less than what is now being paid.

Note: I'm not presenting an argument for or against nationalization...I'm trying to answer the posters question about how much it costs to produce a gallon of gas.
