Bible actually suggests hell is separation from God in eternity. Someone teaching literally from the Bible should not consider hell to be a fiery pit somewhere in middle earth. The flames and pitchfork guy are modern associations, not biblical.

Exactly. The Bible does teach that the damned will be cast into the Lake of Fire but the real torment will be a complete and total separation from God. Literally all good things come from Him. And it's not just the things that I listed above like love, compassion, kindness. It's also things like joy, wisdom, understanding, even happiness itself. Once separated from God existence itself will be torment. And that torment will never end.
