I've never bought into that logic. A career record is a career record. If Player A plays for 3 more years, he's going to get a lot more at bats than Player B.
We can do that with every single record.

Aaron's record is still valid IMO. I just recognize Babe as the ultimate home run hitter.

But in this case, Aaron played only one more year than Ruth: 23 years vs 22, but played in 1000 more games.
