First, I'd like to point out that it is other white people that extract the price on those that "offend". There are not enough black folks to do anything significant about the "whines and hurt feelings" that are LOUDLY bleated. It takes the strength of the numbers of the 'concerned' to extract any price.

Having said THAT:

1) I am sure that it is annoying to belong to a group that seems to need to walk on eggshells. I mean that sincerely.

BUT...

2) It is no picnic being a member of a group that is seen to be so infantile that they need the "help" of paternalistic bleeding heart asshats. The soft bigotry of low expectations is as annoying as the eggshelled path.

We are all in a hell of or own countrymen's making.

Holy shite, that was a great post.

Is the stereotypical, racist redneck really any worse than a guy who believes that blacks, latinos, etc. are incapable of competing with whites, and therefore need to be coddled?

You can argue that the do-gooder's heart is in the right place, while the redneck is just an ignorant POS... But IMHO, one of those has done much more harm to minority communities in recent years, and it isn't the redneck.

BHP - I think it is a broader point that should be made. Because of black folks' "identifiability", they are often called to task for $hit they didn't do.

The other side of that is - black folks are reluctant to criticize other black folks - when they clearly should be criticized - because of the survival instincts that arose during Reconstruction, hardened during the struggle and persist to this day. There is a residual defensiveness that when black folks are dismissed from a job, denied admission or other opportunity, the knee jerk reaction is that it is racially motivated.

Both of those forces put, particularly African Americans solidly in the middle class, the community between a proverbial rock and a hard place. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
