No one said it wasnt legal to kill. The OP just said he respected the idea that the turtle might be pretty old so he let it live. I can agree with this mindset. There is no need to kill it. He didnt set the traps out for turtles. Why not just let it go?

If the turtle was harming something or was in an area that it shouldnt be, yes remove it.

In Louisiana, it will. If my memory serves me correctly, there are some kind of "special circumstances" that Louisiana received.

I can tell you all this, I caught 5 last year and released all but one of them. Point being, there are more than you think/see.

I caught one I happened to see in a ditch. It was the size of a silver dollar. The others were big enough to eat but I already had enough "Common Snapping Turtle" in the freezer or waiting to be killed/cleaned so I just figured I'd spare them for someone to catch/enjoy when they're 50+ lbs.
