The first two to jump to mind have already been mentioned (Cheney and Keady) but one that hasn't been mentioned yet is Ralph Miller.
He took Wichita State to the Elite Eight in the 60's then got the coaching job at Oregon State and turned them into a Pac-8 the Pac-10 powerhouse in the 70's and 80's. They were almost always beat in the first weekend of the tournament by a higher seed but made the Elite Eight at least once but maybe twice.
