I guess they think this will drive digital video sales? They can't be making a profit selling the box at $99.

Since I've become a member of prime and get the free shipping I buy all kinds of stuff from them I never considered before and they are often my first stop when shopping. I would think many people getting the FireTV would get Prime, and if they get Prime they'll buy products from Amazon more often. I really think that would drive more sales than digital media. I've had a Kindle Fire for 2 years and the only digital media I've actually bought is one book.

The economics just aren't right for digital media to take off right now. They are still charging $3.99 or more for rentals when you can rent from RedBox for $1.50.

I first read this as Amazon was bringing back Firefly

Then I realized what it really was and became disappointed, but this is cool though.

Couldn't agree more. I've been buying off Amazon for a few years have never had a problem with them. I bought a Sony DVD player last year and it was shipped by one of their participating companies and you could tell it was repackaged and missing parts. The seller wouldn't respond. The customer service department called me....let me say that again, they called me, and asked if the problem had been resolved. When I told her no, she said: "No problem, I'll issue you a credit and will send you the return info. I'll handle it with the seller."

I buy everything on Amazon.

yes, yes yes. their customer service is remarkable. they always refund me shipping if an item is late no hassle. they always take back anything i change my mind on.. no hassle. and like you said even when it's a third party they don't mind taking it back if you are not satisfied. amazon is the greatest thing ever with amazon prime.. but my parents hate amazon for some crazy reason. something about scamming e-mails or something that i highly doubt amazon even has anything to do with..

they're taking notice. in a big way. They are actively lobbying and suing to make sure those devices are gutted and neutered as much as possible so you are forced to remain slave to the cable companies. It's sickening.

Time Warner put their TV streaming tv app on Roku.

They didn't have to do that and it actually costs them money since it negates any reason to pay them $10 a month for an extra cable box.

Although, I wouldn't be surprised if that is their end game so they would no longer even have to worry about renting out equipment that becomes incredibly dated over time.

hell, if you convert your media to MP4 format you can plug a portable hard drive right into the Roku and watch off their media app.

I've been slowly ripping my DVD collection for just that.

if it was just me i would drop cable, but i got a house full 4-5 rooms deep. just makes things simpler. i don't like paying nearly 200$ for cable alone (not including internet) every freaking month

may be already discussed, but i heard the voice control only works for amazon content. if so that isn't worth it for me..
