Good Luck. I ABSOLUTELY HATED working for Halliburton. I had a few choice words for folks when I left.

Best thing to happen to you and you didn't even know it.

In about six months I will be in the same boat, that is unless I get really lucky with the one of the two majors I applied with last week. Barring that I know I will prob be getting on with one of the service companies. Hall and SLB have been keeping tabs on me. Of those two and BHI or Weatherford who would you recommend? My plan is to work and get all the schooling from one of the bigs then jump to a smaller company like Scientific or hopefully an oil company.

What do you want to do?

SLB and HAL will have the roughest life for field engineers

BHI and WFT will be a little more relaxed.

That being said, SLB and HAL will probably pay the most and have the most organized career paths. Baker will too. WFT is more "entrepreneurial", meaning you have to find your own way.

Something in drilling and completions. The end goal is drilling eng but since I dont have the typical major for it ie "PETE, Chem, Mech", I know I am going to have to take the hard road to achieve it. I will have an industrial eng degree. I am thinking MWD/LWD then maybe DD or company man then hopefully get on with a oil company as a D&C technologist. I know Chev, BP, and Shell all have that position, then just try and work my way up.

You are right, that will be a hard road to get to a drilling engineer. If you could do MWD/LWD, then maybe start applying with consultants and get a night company man/trainee gig, you may be able to transition to an in house drilling engineer for an operator (while still being a consultant), then eventually get hired by that company as an employee. That's possible.

My roommate in college only lasted 6-7 months with Weatherford. He was getting married though so I guess he didn't like the constant travel. Not sure if he reads this board, but I think he is just a giant pussy.

I am a field engineer for Halliburton here in South Texas. Specifically I work in the cementing department. Maybe it's just where I work but it's beyond laid back. We go on about 3-4 jobs a month and the rest of the time it's basically an 8-5 job and we work half days on Saturday and don't even have to go into the office on Sundays. Granted of the 10 days we are on you will be on call for about 4 days, where you have to answer any phone calls that need engineering assistance. It's not bad at all and I'm only 1.5 hrs from Houston and 2hrs from SA.

Our schedules is working 10 days on 4 days off. And the money is great!

We work a 21-7 rotation, except no office on Saturday Sunday. When we're not on a job it's just a regular office job. Super laid back, extended lunch breaks, etc.

Sometimes I just think frick it, do solid controls "mud man" and get that awesome 14&14 schedule. I know of a couple of guys with my degree that did that, both were in house for majors within 5 years. Should be nice come hunting season.

The one thing I dont want to do but is most likely what they are going to try and hire me for.

Halliburton?

Never heard of them.

Rule #1: Avoid little mom & pop start-ups.

Next question.
