It's certainly a mix of both but Fredo was promised a bigger cut and jumped on it. He didn't have the brains or the balls to pull a coup hunself

This. Fredo was jealous of his brother and had felt passed over by his father. Watch the scene with Mike and Fredo in the boat house when Mike is questioning him. Fredo lays out his reasons for doing it right there. The execution doesn't matter, it's the purposes behind it and Fredo lay's it out right in that scene.


One thing I did love is the Talia Shires character...the corleone sister. As the movie's progress, she goes from Spoiled brat to matriarch of the family replacing her mother. If you notice, Connie starts having influence and power over her brother,a common cultural thing in Italian families. You respect mamma.
