I prefer The Beermongers over Apex. Apex has a better tap list, but The Beermongers is more of a fun dive and a better place to pick up local knowledge, IMO, and it is right across the the street from Apex.
The Commons Brewery is a few of blocks away, as well, and if you are looking for a really good casual meal, Lardo is in the area, as well.
ETA: My problem with Powell's is that it is damn near impossible to get in and out of there in less than half a day. It is the largest bookstore I've ever seen.
