It seems that we are already doing these things, and while it will be much harder to comprehensively overhaul our youth structure, what players are doing is far more important than how or where they're doing it.

We've gotten to where we are on the backs of players who participated in organized practices for three hours a week, played in far too many games over the weekend and didn't even watch soccer until they signed a professional contract (looking at you, Landon Donovan).

And lots of naturalized US citizens. This shows that a lot of things can be undone. But I'm not sure that the plateau we've reached of the knock-out stages is any more than we can reasonably hope for, barring major catastrophe in Europe and South America.

I should also point out that the how and where of how they are doing it will give us a deeper pool, whereas we can say that the players who are exceeding the limitations of the structure are merely outliers.
