What's the reasoning? Does the chill throw off their hibernation/burrowing clock?

I don't think it affects molting/hibernation/burrowing much. It's more for survival. If you can get some that were only on ice for a small amount of time you'll probably be fine. But a sack that's been in the cooler for a couple days would not do so well. Also, if the crawifsh are "chilled" you should stock in the morning when the water and air are coolest. (This is based on you stocking your pond later this summer when prices are down but temps are up)
