I am obviously not saying extra position eligibilty hurts a player. It has nothing to do with his fielding. Last year there were 8 3B's that had more HR's than any catcher. 20 HR's at 3B puts Santana in the bottom third of a 12-team league starters not to mention he falls in the same place in RBI's and R's. His value lies at C.
Just as I am not going to play Mauer at 1B, I am not going to play Santana at 3rd. If I am, it likely means I have a bad corner sacker and then what is deeper on the waiver wire, 3B(1B) or C?
