I had a Sony Experia and now a HTC One and both did stock (if I remember correctly)

Google Hangouts allows you to group text the "proper" way and it will likely be the stock SMS app on Android phones shortly.
When you open Hangouts, you have the option to enable SMS. Do this and you are good to go.
With the current stock SMS Android app, you can group text but when you get responses, they come in individually. That is not the case with Hangouts. It will perform the way the OP is wanting and keep everything in one thread.
