Landing a Tuna

I've never been tuna fishing....I'm hoping to make a trip or two this year. I was watching Wicked Tuna this weekend and I noticed that they put the pole in rod holders and reeled the fish in that way.....is that standard? Or do you put the rod in a belt and muscle that thing in? Need to know if I need to up my workout regimen in prep for the trip.

We held the rods and/or put them in a belt on my one tuna trip. Caught them on top of the water behind a shimp boat. It was like trying to hold onto a runaway bull by the tail. Fun shite.

Unless you are trolling and have my favorite fishing tool

They fight those fish that way because they are much larger than yellowfin, and the gear weighs a ton.

Get ready to be worn the frick out. Nothing pulls like a tuna IMO.

Anyone use this offshore? How does it compare to the belt? Never been but I've seen them used on TV

Best advice I can give you is go with someone who knows how to tuna fish and has the gear already. Either go with them on their boat and pay your portion or invite them on your boat, ask them to bring their gear and you pay for all the expenses for the trip. They will provide the gear and fishing knowledge.
I've fished offshore for many years out of orange beach. To successfully/safely go offshore and catch tuna requires a significant investment of time and cash. We have to run a good bit further than you LA boys to get to productive Tuna grounds so it makes it imperative that we are well prepared when the opportunity to land a fish comes we do everything right and have a successful landing. Nothing worse than losing possibly the only YFT you hook up at the boat before you sink the steel in her.
Again, go with someone who knows what's up a few times.

Never caught the big ones before. WT focuses on the real toads...the blue fin. But here's a pretty cool method I witnessed on last year's tuna trip.
And the result is this.

Tuna? Slump Buster Hogging whatever you want to call them, first ply her with cheep whisky then run her friends off.
