I like the 1911 and wouldn't consider it unreliable, however there could be better choices for a beginner.

Glocks are ugly, don't feel as good in the hand, and are basically all identical, however they are probably the easiest platform for a newbie to operate and maintain (but get the right holster and use it religiously).

Neither do I, and I do actually own one. There are firearms that I believe hold up better under abuse, but it's incredible that they're still going strong after more than a century. It's just fun to go against the 1911 fanaticism on this board. KingRanch takes is personally... I swear the guy is a relative of JMB.
