But they are not that uncommon and surgery is generally successful with no hearing loss or any other problems.

This. Some are just monitored and never require surgery but depends on size and symptoms.

Can be a fairly lengthy and involved surgery, if required. A lot of neurosurgeons don't do it because of this.
Nanda, in Shreveport used to specialize in that surgery.
