My two cents:

Bitcoin will not be a long term currency, so i don't think investing in the coins themselves is a good idea as currency speculation.

I think the only way to make money (long term) in bitcoin is to invest in companies that leverage bitcoin as a platform as opposed to a form of fiat currency.

The Etherium & CC type projects are fascinating. I would just encourage people to actually understand the underlying vehicle they decide to invest/trade, regardless of what it is. It may sound like common sense, but you'd be surprised at the number of people who bought bitcoin during its last run-up without even the faintest idea of what a p2p network is. Trusting in the greater fool theory is well and good until you're the fool.

Why would you ask about Bitcoin and not a decent mutual fund? With 10K, I'd take a mutual fund in a heart beat. Bitcoin is way too sketchy.

Not sure why this is a response to my post, but: You're right, most people probably don't ask about bitcoin. But the OP is. It would follow that the proper advice would be to understand the asset (or whatever you choose to call it). Same goes for a mutual fund, ETF, forex, etc.
