We had old friends in from Montgomery in town tonight and we all just got out of the pool. Their little ones had a blast!
On that note, spend the extra $4k and get a 400k BTU heater. We used it a bunch this past winter.
Gunite is the way to go. It can be shaped to just about anything giving you a wide array of pool shapes and curves.
I also put in a 6'x12' chair deck--a section that is part of the pool but only 6" deep. Kids love it as does our dogs!
Good luck with the project--it can get stressful and costly quickly.
