That's what the wife and I typically do. Though we start in SF, then go to Sonoma/Napa. If you buy a shite ton of wine and beer and ship some back in luggage, it makes it easier to do wine and Russian River/Lagunitas last.

As for Domain Chandon, my wife loved it so much she joined the wine club. We went back there for her birthday last year and they really took care of us.
