The only thing frat about Montrose is Jackson's

Montrose is for the gays
Actually, I read recently that it is estimated that only about 10% of montrose residents are actually gay. Don't let a few flamboyant ones scare you off, it's a cool neighborhood. But pretty expensive if you want a decent place.

I lived in an apartment on gray street in Midtown for a year. Tons of good looking girls walking around to check out from our balcony. I lived right about cyclone Anya's (can't remember if that's the right name)

Cuts off an hour drive time back to Louisiana.

Plus he's the unofficial mayor of Montrose.
Personally I'd move to the Woodlands until I could find a way to not live in Houston.

I've thought about Houston recently, but I can't find any place that's affordable. Admittedly, I haven't looked very hard, as I think I'm going to do a my Masters at LSU before thinking about leaving Louisiana.
Still, everyone always talks about how affordable Houston is, but $1600/month for a shitty two bedroom (seemed like the average going rate)isn't cheap to me. In fact, I've never lived anywhere that costs remotely that much. Where are these supposedly cheap neighborhoods that aren't sprawling Hispanic ghettos ten miles outside of downtown?
I visited with a native a few months ago and couldn't believe how much of the city was hideous condo space as opposed to livable houses. Still, as I get older, I'm starting to care less about things like that. NOLA is becoming too much of a "destination" for rich New York and California kids, and I'm probably going to want to leave sooner rather than later.

Where are you going to be working?
Posted on 3/18/14 at 10:17 pm to Harvey the Rabbit
Live near where you work.
The friction of life is needlessly high with a ridiculous Houston commute.
In the loop is a good starting point. If you're near memorial park, there is always jogging and outdoor activities.

Houston is the 4th largest city and soon to be the 3rd. Go check out the cost of living at the other top 5.

Barry's point is a good one. However, the cost of living in Houston has gone up the last 5 years or so, at least in the loop. Midtown, Montrose, & the Heights/Washington have exploded with newer, higher rent apartments & condos. Housing prices in those areas and anywhere inside the loop have gone up quite a bit as well. It is definitely a sellers market.
In terms of the cost of living though, expect your car insurance to be less, sales tax to be less, and property tax is much better than LA's income tax.
I don't remember, is LA 6%? For math purposes lets say you make $100k, that would be $6k in taxes + your property tax (albeit small). In Houston, your house would have to be $400-500k before you had to pay that. I am sure I am remembering something wrong but I know that I came out way ahead after the move.
