I don't know what sort of dope Joe was smoking in the 80s but Reagan didn't "reach out" to Dems. They hated and mocked him from the get go.
Now he did have a log of support from everyday people who had been Dems. But it was not him reaching out to them but rather it was them realizing after Carter that the Dems were fricking nuts.

Did you know that Reagan used to invite Tip O'Neill over to the White House for drinks so that the two of them could reach a compromise?
