The "old Big East" was in a way broken into two; The American Conference (who took teams like Louisville, Cinci, UConn) and then the "new Big East" which kept the teams known as the Catholic 7 (Marquette, St. Johns, Georgetown, etc) and added Butler and Creighton.

It's pretty simple, Big East includes the basketball schools and some new ones, it was the Catholic 7 plus those they invited. The AAC are the schools who played basketball and football, think UCONN and Cincy. From one conf you have one football conf and two bball conferences.
