Punishment for the employer by not living up to the 40 hour work week. Otherwise, you would be working maybe 60 hours per week. I've worked jobs, a long time ago, that didn't pay ot. Very menial jobs at the least but I had the option to quit. Of course if he had paid me like some athletes get paid then I would probably still be there working whatever hours he wanted me to.
