There is a lot of overhead built into a 40hr work week. So it's actually cheaper for a company to have someone work overtime than hire another worker. So you give the employee extra money as an incentive to work more hours. Same with weekend pay and holiday pay. Work is not different but there is less supply of workers willing to work those times.
